The Truth

La Vérité (The Truth), a black-and-white 1960 French-Italian drama directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot, earned Brigitte Bardot her first recognition as a serious actress. At its center is the trial of Dominique Marceau, a young woman without steady work, accused of killing her former lover Gilbert Tellier — an ambitious, recently graduated orchestra conductor who had become engaged to Dominique's sister, Annie. The prosecution argues the shooting was carefully premeditated, while the defense maintains it erupted from a sudden surge of emotion. Over the course of the hearings, Gilbert's acquaintances, Dominique's past lovers, and her violinist sister take the stand. The testimony they give gradually builds a more nuanced picture of Dominique, Gilbert, and the relationship that bound them together. Inspired by the real Pauline Dubuisson case, the film won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Academy Award in the same category.
