The Thief of Venice

The Thief of Venice (original title: Il ladro di Venezia) is a 1950 Italian-American swashbuckling adventure film directed by John Brahm. Brahm co-wrote the screenplay with Salvatore Cabasino and Jesse L. Lasky Jr. The film stars María Montez, Paul Hubschmid and Massimo Serato, with Guido Celano also in the cast. Shot in Italian, it runs 109 minutes.

Set in Venice in 1575, the story follows the Chief Inquisitor Scarpa's bid to seize power after the Doge's death; when Admiral Disani is murdered, his officer Lorenzo goes into hiding, fighting Scarpa while falling in love with Disani's daughter Francesca. The film premiered in Italy on 22 December 1950 and reached US theaters two years after it was made.
