The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea
The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea is a 2019 drama-thriller directed by Syllas Tzoumerkas and co-written with Youla Boudali, blending horror and surrealist elements into its storytelling. A co-production between Greece, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden, it is Tzoumerkas' third feature after Homeland (2010) and A Blast (2014).
Shot in Greek and set in a poor small town in Western Greece, the film follows a police officer and an eel hatchery worker whose solitary lives intersect when a circle of violence erupts around them. Angeliki Papoulia, Youla Boudali and Christos Passalis lead the ensemble cast. The film had its world premiere in the Panorama section of the 69th Berlinale. At the Greek Film Academy's 2020 Iris Awards, it won best director for Tzoumerkas and best actress for Papoulia.
