Rene the Cane

Rene the Cane (René la Canne) is a 1977 French-Italian crime comedy directed by Francis Girod. Inspired by the life of the real criminal René la Canne, who was notorious in the 1940s and 1950s, the film was scripted by Girod together with Jacques Rouffio, based on a book by Roger Borniche.

Gérard Depardieu stars in the title role alongside Michel Piccoli, with a supporting cast that includes Sylvia Kristel, Venantino Venantini, Évelyne Bouix and Philippe Brizard. Shot in 1976 and released in France the following year, the roughly 90-minute French-language film drew 534,714 admissions at the French box office.
