Recep İvedik 4

Movie · 2014 · 15 people

Recep İvedik 4 is the fourth film in the Recep İvedik series starring Şahan Gökbakar, released on 21 February 2014. A sequel to Recep İvedik 3, the comedy drew 7,369,098 viewers in Turkey, making it the second most-watched film of all time there after Recep İvedik 5, and took in more than 72 million Turkish lira. The series, which began in 2008, brings to cinema a character Gökbakar created for television.

This time Recep coaches a football team of neighbourhood children. The ground where they train is about to be bought by a wealthy investor, and Recep will not allow it. His only plan is to buy it himself, and the only way he finds to raise the money is to enter Survivor and win the grand prize. The story thus moves to the Maldives, where Recep meets Caribbean pirates. Şahan Gökbakar leads, with İrfan Kangı, Nurullah Çelebi, Ali İhsan Varol and Cem Korkmaz in the cast.

Togan Gökbakar directs again and Şahan Gökbakar wrote the script. Çamaşırhane produced it, with Emrah Çoban named as producer, and filming was completed in the Maldives. It runs about 117 minutes. One review found it stuck in the series' rut, lifting the Survivor contest almost whole onto the screen.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

There's a warm core to the story, a football team of neighbourhood kids and the fight to save their pitch, and that side speaks to children. But Recep's rude, tactless manner is at the heart of the series' humour, and little ones may copy what he says and does. Better to watch it with children of middle-school age and up, with an adult alongside. For families who just want a laugh, it does the job.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

The bond with the audience clearly hasn't frayed by the fourth film; Recep is still a strong magnet. In terms of film language, though, it leans far too heavily on the series' own formula. The idea of saving the kids' pitch promises an emotional spine, but as the story stretches to Survivor and to pirates, that spine risks breaking into loosely linked sketches. One review's remark that the contest was lifted almost whole onto the screen sums up the problem: a ready-made TV format stands in for the film building its own dramatic structure. Huge box-office success should not be mistaken for creative renewal.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Recep İvedik 4 drawing over 7 million admissions says less about the film than about Turkey's entertainment habits in the 2010s. A series born from a character created for television now putting a TV contest at the centre of its plot is a telling example of how television culture shapes cinema. The threat of the neighbourhood kids' playing field being sold to a wealthy investor, meanwhile, touches on a real concern about shrinking open space in cities. Beyond the box-office figures, that is the most interesting thing to think about here.
