Nine
Rob Marshall directed and co-produced Nine, a 2009 romantic musical drama adapted from the 1982 Broadway musical, which in turn grew out of Federico Fellini's 8½. Michael Tolkin and Anthony Minghella wrote the screenplay. It followed Marshall's Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. It is an American-Italian co-production.
The story follows Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis), a celebrated film director in a midlife crisis whose creativity is slipping away. While trying to finish his latest picture, he must balance the women in his life: his wife Luisa, his mistress Carla, his muse Claudia, his costume designer and confidante Lilliane, the American journalist Stephanie, Saraghina from his childhood and his mother. An ensemble including Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Fergie and Sophia Loren plays them.
All the songs are by Maury Yeston; three new ones, Take It All, Cinema Italiano and Guarda La Luna, join the stage numbers. The film premiered at the Dubai International Film Festival on 9 December 2009, reached US cinemas on 25 December and Italy on 15 January 2010. Reviews were mixed and it flopped commercially, though the cast, Cotillard especially, drew praise. It earned four Oscar nominations: Best Supporting Actress for Cruz, plus production design, costume design and original song.
