Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill created NCIS, an American police procedural drama. Premiering on CBS on September 23, 2003, it portrays a fictional team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, who solve crimes tied to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Its concept and characters first appeared in two eighth-season episodes of JAG, making NCIS a spin-off.

The team is led by Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a Gulf War veteran and former Marine. Mark Harmon played him for nineteen years before Gary Cole's Alden Parker took over. The team includes ex-detective Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), forensic scientist Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum).
