Corn Island (Mısır Adası)

Corn Island (Georgian: Simindis k'undzuli) is a 2014 drama film written and directed by Georgian filmmaker Giorgi Ovashvili. Set over the course of a single summer, it follows an elderly farmer and his teenage granddaughter who live on a small silt island in the Enguri River, on the boundary between Georgia and Abkhazia. As they do every year, the pair till the soil and plant corn, working toward the harvest in near-total isolation; the only outsiders they see are the soldiers who patrol along the riverbanks. Their quiet, monotonous existence is disrupted when a wounded soldier hides among their corn plants, forcing them to face the risk of being drawn into the surrounding military conflict and ethnic tensions, while the girl also experiences an emotional and sexual awakening.

The film stars İlyas Salman and Tamer Levent and features dialogue in Georgian, Abkhaz and Russian. It won the Crystal Globe at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and was selected as Georgia's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, reaching the nine-film shortlist.
