Matilda
Matilda is a 2017 Russian historical romantic drama film directed by Alexei Uchitel from a screenplay by Aleksandr Terekhov. It depicts the turbulent relationship between Nicholas Alexandrovich, heir to the Russian throne, and Matilda Kshesinskaya, the celebrated ballerina of the Imperial Theatre, with the story unfolding largely amid the grandeur of Saint Petersburg. Released under the slogan "The Secret of the House of Romanov", the film premiered on 23 October 2017 at the Mariinsky Theatre before opening nationwide on 26 October.
Even before its release, the picture sparked a major public conflict in Russia. A campaign led by State Duma deputy Natalia Poklonskaya sought to ban the film on religious grounds, with monarchist groups denouncing it as a distortion of historical events; the controversy included appeals to the Prosecutor General, threats to distributors and arson attacks in several cities. The cast includes Grigori Dobrigin, and the film won the Nika Award for Best Costume Design.
