Lumière

Lumière is a 1976 French drama and the first picture Jeanne Moreau directed, working from a screenplay she wrote herself. Its story centers on four actresses who, though close friends, differ in age and stand at separate points in their lives and careers. The group retreats to the countryside for a holiday, where they spend their days exchanging thoughts about acting, love, celebrity and the film world, while opening up to one another about their romantic and working pasts. Drawing in part on Moreau's own experiences, the film is frequently noted as one of the earliest works of cinema to build its entire narrative around friendship between women. Alongside her directing duties, Moreau also takes on one of the principal roles.
