Kickboxer
Jean-Claude Van Damme leads Kickboxer (Kickboxer: Kana Kan in Türkiye), the 1989 American martial arts film that launched its series, with former world kickboxing champion Dennis Alexio also in the cast. Seen as the first film to bring Muay Thai to audiences worldwide, it is remembered as a cult classic and as one of the works that define Van Damme. Released by The Cannon Group on 8 September 1989, it grossed about 50 million dollars.
Kurt Sloane (Van Damme) travels to Thailand with his older brother Eric (Alexio), a kickboxing champion. In the ring Eric loses to the feared fighter Tong Po (played by Van Damme's childhood friend Michel Qissi) and is left paralyzed. Sworn to revenge, Kurt persuades a reclusive elderly master to train him in Muay Thai, and after a punishing regimen he faces Tong Po in the ring. Dennis Chan also appears.
Mark DiSalle and David Worth directed together; the story is credited to DiSalle and Van Damme and, by one account, the screenplay to Glenn A. Bruce. Four sequels followed, and Van Damme acted in only the first. The series was rebooted in 2016 with Kickboxer: Vengeance, with Van Damme as the master Durand and Dave Bautista as Tong Po. In Germany the film was released as Karate Tiger 3 – Der Kickboxer.
