Il Conte di Matera

Il Conte di Matera is an Italian swashbuckling adventure film directed by Luigi Capuano and produced by Romana Film, with a screenplay by Vincenzo Talarico. The story draws loose inspiration from the life and death of Giovan Carlo Tramontano, the historical Count of Matera.

The plot follows Count Rambaldo Tramontana, who returns home victorious from a war fought with French backing. Finding the city nearly deserted, he begins to oppress and brutalize its people. Standing against him is young Paolo, the son of a banished enemy, who swears to avenge his father and free the woman he loves. With the support he gathers, Paolo retakes Matera, and the struggle ends in a bloody reckoning followed by a wedding celebration.

The leading roles are played by Virna Lisi and Otello Toso, while the ensemble also features Giacomo Rossi Stuart, Paul Müller and Guido Celano.
