Free Men

Free Men (original title Les Hommes libres) is a 2011 French war drama directed by Ismaël Ferroukhi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alain-Michel Blanc. Produced by Pyramide Productions, it is Ferroukhi's second feature after Le grand voyage and brings to the screen a largely untold chapter of history: the part played by Algerian and other Maghreb Muslims in Paris in the French Resistance and in rescuing Jews during the German occupation of 1940–1944.

At the centre of the story is Younes Ben Daoud, an Algerian immigrant surviving on the black market, who agrees to spy on the Grand Mosque of Paris after his arrest. His encounters with the Algerian Jewish singer Salim Halali and the mosque's rector Si Kaddour Benghabrit, whose network supplied Jews with false Muslim identity papers, gradually turn him into a committed resistance fighter. Tahar Rahim plays the fictional Younes, Michael Lonsdale portrays the historical Benghabrit, and Lubna Azabal also appears in the cast.
