Fatih'in Fedaisi: Kara Murat is a Turkish historical action film directed by Aytekin Birkon that opened in Turkish cinemas on 16 January 2015. Produced by Es Yapım from a screenplay by Birkon and Fatih Usta, the film adapts the comic-book hero Kara Murat created by Rahmi Turan.

Kara Murat is a fearless young raider commander who, during the war between the Ottoman and Byzantine empires in Serbia, can ride alone into enemy ranks and turn the tide of a battle. His successes defending the Ottoman frontiers also attract Byzantine attention, while he risks his life to protect his country, his people, the empire and his family. At court, meanwhile, a succession struggle unfolds: Sultan Murat's brother Orhan Çelebi seeks only the throne for himself. When Sultan Murat hands power to his young and bold son Sultan Mehmet, certain circles take the sultan's youth as an opportunity and begin weaving conspiracies.

The character had earlier been made famous by Yeşilçam adaptations starring Cüneyt Arkın and Kartal Tibet; this film returns Kara Murat to the screen amid a renewed popular interest in historical period productions.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

For a viewer raised on Yeşilçam, the name Kara Murat summons the on-screen valour of Cüneyt Arkın and Kartal Tibet. The strength of those films, flaws and all, lay in their sincerity: the hero's side was clear, and the audience stood firm alongside him. The real test of this new adaptation is whether it can recapture that pure enthusiasm with today's means. In my view, fans of the old films will find the comparison unavoidable; filling the character's place in our memory takes sincerity more than technical polish. Still, it is heartening that the hero born in Rahmi Turan's comic strip gets to meet a new generation.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

An akıncı commander who can charge into enemy lines on his own: you can't ask for a better action premise. A story running a war and a palace succession fight at the same time never has to lose pace, if it's balanced well. The risk is that the longer the intrigue runs, the longer the swords stay sheathed. Since the Kara Murat legend is built on the one-man-army idea, viewers after a heroic saga rather than realism will enjoy it most.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film tells of the Ottoman struggle with Byzantium and the fight for the throne at court through the eyes of a comic-strip hero, so it should be read not as a history lesson but as an adventure built on a real period. When a genuine turning point such as the passing of power from Murad II to the young Mehmed II is woven together with the exploits of a fictional akıncı commander, the era's complex politics are all too easily reduced to a scheme of heroes and villains. It is also notable that the film arrived at a time of renewed interest in period productions: the past is being reshaped on screen to suit today's appetite for heroism. Viewers curious about history should keep in mind the line between real events and comic-book invention.
