Faces of Love

Faces of Love (original title: Repérages) is a 1977 French-Swiss drama written and directed by Michel Soutter. The story follows three actresses cast in a screen adaptation of Anton Chekhov's play Three Sisters, tracing their experiences during the shoot and the intricate relationship that develops between them and the film's director. As the boundaries blur between the roles the women perform and their own lives, the narrative takes on autobiographical overtones drawn from Soutter's personal history. The principal cast includes Delphine Seyrig, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Lea Massari. Seyrig's performance brought her a César Award nomination for Best Actress. Running about ninety minutes, the picture has been singled out by French critic Roger Boussinot as the director's finest achievement, standing as a notable meditation on acting, art and identity within Swiss-French cinema of the period.
