Paolo Carlini — Biography

Paolo Carlini was born on 6 January 1922 in Santarcangelo di Romagna and worked for decades on the Italian stage, in film and on television before his death in Rome on 3 November 1979 at fifty-seven, reportedly from thrombosis. Trained under actress Teresa Franchini, he debuted on stage while still very young and went on to appear in roughly forty-five films between 1940 and his death. Outside Italy he is remembered chiefly for a supporting turn as Mario the hairdresser in Roman Holiday (1953), playing opposite Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck, though within Italy his reputation rested more on television, where critics count him among the earliest stars of the country's serialized TV dramas known as sceneggiati, and on the stage, where he co-starred with actress Lea Padovani in a run of well-received productions during the 1950s. His later film work included Un caso di coscienza (1970), My Darling Slave (1973), Il domestico (1974) and Amici più di prima (1976).
