Özcan Alper — Biography
Özcan Alper was born in 1975 in the Hopa district of Artvin, into a family of Hemshin heritage. After studying physics and later the history of science at Istanbul University, he found his way into filmmaking in the late 1990s through the Mesopotamia Cultural Center and the Nâzım Hikmet Cultural House, and worked for a time as an assistant to director Yeşim Ustaoğlu.
He shot his first short film in the Hemshin dialect and Western Armenian before making his feature debut with Autumn (2008), which brought him numerous national and international awards; his following film, Future Lasts Forever, was also recognized abroad. Known for stories shaped by Turkey's recent political history, including the Kurdish question and unsolved political killings, Alper released Erken Kış in 2025 and is currently directing Yarım Kalan, a film about the life of musician Kazım Koyuncu.
