Naşit Özcan — Biography

Born Ahmet Naşit Özcan in the Şehzadebaşı quarter of Istanbul in 1886, he took his first steps on stage as a child performing orta oyunu (traditional Turkish improvised theater) at the palace. In 1890 he joined the Mızıka-yı Hümayun, and by 1910-11 he was working alongside the celebrated performer Kavuklu Hamdi. He also staged theatrical performances alongside early silent-film screenings, blending stage and cinema at a formative moment for both.

Regarded as one of the foremost masters of Turkish tuluat (improvisational folk theater), Özcan also performed in puppet theater and Karagöz shadow-puppet shows, portraying a range of local and minority character types with skill. He became best known for his İbiş character, a signature role that earned him the honorary title "Komik-i Şehir" (Comedian of the City); he was said to have amused even Sultan Abdülhamid with his wit. Between 1928 and 1943 he also appeared in early Turkish films such as Ankara Postası and Bir Millet Uyanıyor.

Özcan was the father of theater and film performers Adile Naşit and Selim Naşit Özcan. He died in Istanbul on 26 April 1943.
