Engin Çağlar — Biography
Engin Çağlar (born Çağlan Övet; 28 August 1940, Istanbul - 2025, Istanbul) was a Turkish film actor and one of the best-known romantic leads of the Yeşilçam era. Sources give different dates of death: Wikidata and the English Wikipedia state 31 October 2025, while the Turkish Wikipedia and the Turkish press give 1 November 2025. He was 85, and was buried on 2 November 2025.
He finished second in the men's category of the talent contest run by the magazine Sinema ve Ses in 1968 and made his screen debut in the film Öksüz. Cast repeatedly as a leading man, he built up 86 acting credits according to SinemaTürk, among them Hasret (1974), Talihsiz Yavrum, Almanya'da Bir Türk Kızı, Dağlı Güvercin (1986) and Hicran Sokağı (2007). He stepped away from cinema in 1974 to run a printing-supplies business and then a clothing shop, before returning to acting in television series such as Geniş Aile, Büyük Buluşma, El Kızı and Yasemin.
He died in Istanbul after being struck by a motorcycle. Outlets including NTV, Cumhuriyet, T24 and DHA reported that the rider, who faced a sentence of up to six years, was released at the first hearing of the case on 18 December 2025.
