Demet Akalın — Biography
Demet Akalın was born on 23 April 1972 in Gölcük, in Turkey's Kocaeli province. After finishing Barbaros Hayrettin High School she trained as a model, began working professionally at Neşe Erberk's agency and was named Turkey's second beauty at the 1990 Miss Globe pageant.
She began her music career on the nightclub stage, releasing her first album Sebebim in 1996 and Unuttum in 2003. Her big breakthrough came with the 2004 album Banane, and 'Aşkın Açamadığı Kapı' won the Song of the Year award. The gold-certified Kusursuz 19 (2006) and Dans Et (2008) made her one of the leading names of Turkish pop, and Pırlanta (2015) became the year's best-selling album.
She also appeared in the films Hadi İnşallah and Osman Pazarlama. She married Okan Kurt in 2012 and divorced in 2018; their daughter Hira was born in 2014. A winner of three Golden Butterfly and five Kral Turkey Music Awards, Akalın remains one of the most talked-about figures in the tabloid press.
