Catherine Robbe-Grillet — Biography

Catherine Robbe-Grillet was born on 24 September 1930 in Paris under the name Rstakian, to parents of Armenian descent. She trained in commerce before turning to writing, photography and acting, a path she followed for more than sixty years.

She married the writer and filmmaker Alain Robbe-Grillet, a central figure of the French New Novel, in 1957; the marriage lasted until his death in 2008 and left a lasting mark on her work, including supporting parts in the films he directed — L'Immortelle, Trans-Europ-Express, The Man Who Lies, Eden and After and N. a pris les dés... — as well as an appearance in Successive Slidings of Pleasure.

Writing as Jean de Berg and Jeanne de Berg, she authored sadomasochistic fiction and diaries that established her as a known voice in BDSM literature; documentaries released in 1997 and 2014 examined this side of her life. In 2020 the German newspaper FAZ profiled her and called her an unapologetic libertine.
