Cansever — Biography

Born Dzansever Dalipova, Cansever came into the world on 8 July 1967 in the town of Köprülü, then part of Yugoslav Macedonia, the youngest of seven siblings in a Romani family. She lost an eye in a childhood accident at around age twelve. Drawn to music from an early age, she released her debut album in her home country in 1992.

She first drew attention in Turkey in 1997 after performing a folk song on a television program, and went on to become one of the recognized voices of arabesque music through a series of subsequent albums. Years later, one of her songs found new popularity after being featured in a television series. Throughout much of her career she also lived with a chronic joint condition.

Diagnosed with leukemia in 2026, she underwent treatment and a bone marrow transplant in Germany, during which fellow musicians organized a solidarity event on her behalf. Cansever died in Essen on 8 August 2026 and was buried at a mosque in her hometown of Köprülü.
