Ayten Gökçer — Biography
Ayten Gökçer, born Kaçmaz, was born on 26 January 1940 in Ankara. She joined the ballet department of the State Conservatory in 1953 and entered the State Theatres company in 1958, quickly becoming a stage-focused performer rather than a film actress.
She became widely known for her leading role in the play Yedi Kocalı Hürmüz, and in 1999 made her television debut as Belgin in the series Yılan Hikayesi. Later in her career she also took on film roles, including İstanbul Kırmızısı (2017). In recognition of her decades on stage she was honored with the title of State Artist, and her marriage to fellow actor Cüneyt Gökçer was well known in Turkish theatre circles.
Regarded as one of the veteran figures of Turkish theatre, Gökçer died in Istanbul on 14 May 2024 at the age of 84, and her passing was widely mourned across the country's cultural community.
