Atıf Yılmaz — Biography
Atıf Yılmaz Batıbeki (9 December 1925, Mersin - 5 May 2006, Istanbul) was one of the most prolific directors in Turkish cinema, as well as a screenwriter and producer. The Turkish Wikipedia gives his birth year as 1926, but Wikidata, the English and German articles, DBpedia, IMDb and SinemaTürk converge on 1925, and centenary tributes published in mid-2025 support that year. The "died 1926" line in the Beyazperde entry is plainly a data error. The German article describes his family as Kurdish, from Palu in Elazığ province.
He studied law at Istanbul University before moving to the painting department of the Academy of Fine Arts, and directed his first film in 1951. Counts of the films he directed range from 114 to 121 depending on the source, with most records clustering around 120; some 53 screenplays and 28 producer credits are also attributed to him. He placed the position of women in society at the centre of films such as Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım, Mine, Adı Vasfiye and Aaahh Belinda.
He is credited with influencing directors including Zeki Ökten, Şerif Gören, Ali Özgentürk and Yılmaz Güney, and received the Golden Orange Life Achievement Award. He was commemorated on the twentieth anniversary of his death, and a documentary about him was announced.
