Umut Sönmez — Biography

Umut Sönmez is a footballer whose career has moved back and forth between Germany and Turkey, playing on the left wing and in attacking midfield. He was born in Turkey and raised in Germany; his family is of Azerbaijani descent and he played for the Azerbaijan under-21 team. He has won three cups: the Südbaden Cup with FC 08 Villingen, the TFF Second League cup with Sakaryaspor and the Württemberg Cup with VfR Aalen.

He came through the FC Augsburg academy and took his first professional step in 2013 with the reserves, Augsburg II. He then played for FC Memmingen before moving to Turkey for Orduspor and Gaziantep BB. In 2016 he played for Süper Lig side Kayserispor, and in later years for Adana Demirspor, Manisa, Tuzlaspor, 24 Erzincanspor, Pendikspor and Sakaryaspor. He first wore the Azerbaijan U21 shirt on 5 March 2014 in a 1-1 friendly with Moldova.

On 15 September 2023 he signed with Regionalliga club VfR Aalen and won the Württemberg Cup that season. His career then continued at FV Ravensburg in the Oberliga Baden-Württemberg, the fifth tier of German football.
