Ümmiye Koçak — Biography
Ümmiye Koçak (born 1 March 1957 in Çelemli, Adana Province) is a Turkish actress, writer, farmer and director, known for her work on behalf of women in rural Turkey.
She finished primary school in her home village and, after marrying in 1982, settled in Arslanköy, a mountain village in the Taurus range near Mersin, where she raised three children. In 2001 she founded the women's theatre group Arslanköy Kadınlar Tiyatro Grubu there and directed three plays; in 2006 the group performed at the Sabancı International Theatre Festival in Adana.
A film she financed with money earned from farm work won her an award in New York in 2016, and she also directed a commercial featuring Cristiano Ronaldo. In 2017 her story was included in the Ministry of National Education's fifth-grade social studies textbook.
