Uğur Tütüneker — Biography

Uğur Tütüneker was born on August 2, 1963, in Bursa. His family emigrated to Germany in the early 1970s, where he came up through Bayern Munich's youth academy before joining Galatasaray in 1986 at the invitation of coach Jupp Derwall. Wearing the number 7 shirt for a decade, he made 212 Süper Lig appearances and scored 37 goals, won four league titles and two Turkish Cups, and was part of the 1988-89 squad that reached the semi-finals of the European Champions Cup. He scored once for the national team, including what is credited as Turkey's 300th international goal, before retiring with a testimonial at Galatasaray in 1996.

Moving into coaching, Tütüneker managed clubs including Yozgatspor, Siirtspor, Kayserispor, İstanbul Başakşehir and İstanbulspor, and briefly led Orduspor to top spot in the First League in 2010-11. He guided Konyaspor to Süper Lig promotion via the play-offs in 2012-13, then had short spells in charge of Çaykur Rizespor and Kayseri Erciyesspor. In 2016, while managing Switzerland's FC Wil 1900, he was detained as part of the FETÖ/PDY investigation and the club terminated his contract; he was acquitted in the resulting trial in February 2019. He returned to Turkey in 2019 to take charge of Adana Demirspor, leaving the post in July 2020.
