Turhan Tezol — Biography

Turhan Tezol was born on 9 August 1932 in Istanbul to Mehmet Şükrü, an immigrant from Kavala, and his wife Zeliha, and grew up with four brothers and two sisters. He began his basketball career at Modaspor, winning three Turkish championships with the club before moving to İzmir to join Altınordu. Once he retired from playing, he took on executive roles at Altay, Göztepe, and Altınordu, and also worked for the Turkish Basketball Federation.

Called up to Turkey's under-20 side at 19 and later to the senior national team, Tezol competed at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and represented Turkey at the 1955, 1957, and 1959 European Championships, earning 71 caps and serving as captain. Particularly admired for his dribbling ability, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer later in life and died in İzmir on 27 April 2014, survived by his wife Nesrin, two sons, and five grandchildren. An annual tennis tournament held in İzmir, now in its fourth decade, carries his name in tribute to his memory.
