Turgut Berkes — Biography
Turgut Ali Berkes, born in 1953 in İzmir, was a distinctive figure in Turkish rock music who worked simultaneously as a musician, painter, and writer. After finishing secondary school at TED Ankara College, he studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art in England, then returned to Turkey and worked variously as a radio programmer, librarian, journalist, and translator.
In 1989 he partnered with Fuat Güner of the pop trio Mazhar-Fuat-Özkan (MFÖ) to found FT Recording, one of Istanbul's most advanced studios at the time. His 2000 solo album "Karakutu" ("The Black Box") drew strong critical praise, and he went on to perform with a band of the same name while running an ongoing "virtual album" project that offered new material free on his website. He balanced this music career with freelance literary and technical translation work.
From 2007 he lived with his family and cats in a quiet bay near Bodrum, where he died on 20 August 2018.
