Turgay Şeren — Biography

Born Türkay Sabit Şeren on 15 May 1932 in Ankara, Turgay Şeren was a legendary goalkeeper, later a coach and sports administrator, remembered above all for spending his entire playing career at a single club, Galatasaray.

Rising through Galatasaray's youth ranks to the first team, Şeren played on until the end of the 1966-67 season and became one of the club's most-capped players in official matches, winning several league and cup titles along the way. A long-serving and at times captain of the Turkey national team, he was the country's first-choice goalkeeper at the 1954 FIFA World Cup, Turkey's first appearance in the tournament. His saves against West Germany in Berlin in 1951 earned him the enduring nickname 'Berlin Panteri' (Panther of Berlin).

After retiring, Şeren went on to coach Mersin İdman Yurdu, Vefa, Samsunspor and finally Galatasaray, while also building a long career as a football columnist and television commentator; he later led Turkey's Professional Footballers' Association for two decades. He died in Istanbul on 7 July 2016, and both Galatasaray and the Turkish Football Federation continue to honor his memory each year on the anniversary of his passing.
