Tuncay Şanlı — Biography
Tuncay Şanlı (born 16 January 1982 in Adapazarı), often known simply as Tuncay, is a Turkish coach and former international footballer. Naturally a striker, he also played as an attacking midfielder and on either wing. He began his career at his hometown club Sakaryaspor before joining Fenerbahçe in 2002.
He won three Süper Lig titles with Fenerbahçe and made international headlines with a hat-trick against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League in December 2004. In 2007 he moved to Middlesbrough on a free transfer; he was voted the club's player of the year in 2009 but could not prevent their relegation.
He later played for Stoke City, VfL Wolfsburg, Bolton Wanderers, Bursaspor and Qatari side Umm Salal, finishing his playing career at India's Pune City. Capped 80 times with 22 goals for Turkey, he was part of the squads that finished third at the 2003 Confederations Cup and Euro 2008. After retiring he moved into coaching; he returned to Fenerbahçe in a staff role in 2025 and left the club in 2026.
