The Ottoman Lieutenant (Osmanlı Subayı)
The Ottoman Lieutenant (Turkish: Osmanlı Subayı) is a 2017 Turkish-American romantic war drama directed by Joseph Ruben and written by Jeff Stockwell. Set during World War I, the film follows Lillie, an idealistic American nurse whose love affair with an Ottoman officer unfolds after a difficult journey takes her first to Istanbul and then to Eastern Anatolia, where she finds herself torn between two loves in a region on the brink of war.
The film stars Michiel Huisman, Hera Hilmar, Josh Hartnett and Ben Kingsley, with Haluk Bilginer also in the cast. Despite an estimated budget of around 40 million dollars, it earned very little at the box office after its US release on March 10, 2017. Released around the same time as The Promise, it drew criticism from reviewers who alleged it was made to deny the Armenian genocide, making it a subject of controversy.
