The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Andrew Adamson directed the 2005 fantasy adventure The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, which brings C. S. Lewis's 1950 novel to the screen and launched the Narnia film series. Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media produced it; after a London premiere on December 7, 2005, it opened in the United Kingdom the following day and in the United States on December 9. Against a $180 million budget it earned $745 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2005.
The story follows the four Pevensie siblings, evacuated during the Blitz: Peter (William Moseley), Susan (Anna Popplewell), Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley). A wardrobe in a professor's house leads them to Narnia, a land of talking animals locked in winter. Under the rule of Jadis, the White Witch (Tilda Swinton), the children ally with the lion Aslan, voiced by Liam Neeson, to fight her.
Adamson wrote the screenplay with Ann Peacock and the team of Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. The film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup and also took the BAFTA for makeup. Together with its sequels Prince Caspian (2008) and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010), the three films grossed $1.5 billion worldwide.
