La víctima número 8

La víctima número 8

TV Series · 2018 · 7 people

Sara Antuña and Marc Cistaré created La víctima número 8 (Victim Number 8), a 2018 Spanish conspiracy thriller that ran for a single season of eight episodes. It was shown simultaneously on ETB 2 and Telemadrid from 10 October to 28 November 2018, and after Netflix took the international rights it reached viewers worldwide from 16 August 2019.

The story opens with a jihadist terrorist attack in the historic old town of Bilbao that kills seven people and wounds dozens. Told in thriller style, the series places both victims and perpetrators at its centre, explores the personal viewpoint of each side and shows how the characters cope with the consequences of the violence. The police investigation is fixed on catching those responsible while it looks for answers to the unknowns that surface as the drama moves forward. The premise is said to be inspired by the Barcelona attacks of August 2017. César Mateo, María de Nati and Verónika Moral star, with Marcial Álvarez, Lisi Linder, Alfonso Torregrosa, Itziar Lazkano, Jesús Ruyman and Itziar Aizpuru also in the cast.

Production was carried out by Mediapro's companies Globomedia and K2000 in cooperation with ETB and Telemadrid. The series is classed as drama, action and thriller.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

One season, eight episodes: this show's biggest advantage is that it finishes its story without stretching it. Opening on the attack in Bilbao sets a strong hook right away, and alternating between victims and perpetrators then adds a different angle to each episode. In my view that many-voiced structure has a cost: amid the crowded cast, the police investigation sometimes slips into the background and the middle episodes can sag. Still, building the season as one complete story is a big plus for anyone after a tight thriller that can be finished over a few evenings.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A thriller that opens with a terror attack raises the stakes from the very first minute. Once the police investigation locks onto catching those responsible, the pace rarely lets up, and new unknowns keep surfacing as it goes. But don't expect pure action: the series also spends a lot of time inside the heads of victims and perpetrators. If you like drama as much as the chase, the eight episodes fly by.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The show's boldest choice is to approach a jihadist attack from the perpetrators' point of view as well as the victims'. That refuses an easy good-versus-evil story and asks what violence leaves behind in a city, in families and in everyday life. Setting it in Bilbao's historic centre, with the premise said to be inspired by the August 2017 Barcelona attacks, ties the subject to Spain's recent past rather than leaving it as abstract suspense. Even so, a story that tries to understand perpetrators has to tread carefully on the thin line between understanding and excusing, and not every viewer will receive that balance the same way.
