The Insider
Michael Mann directed The Insider, an American biographical thriller released in 1999. Its screenplay, by Mann and Eric Roth, grew out of "The Man Who Knew Too Much", Marie Brenner's 1996 article for Vanity Fair. It rests on real events: the story of tobacco whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand and the effort to get his account aired on CBS's 60 Minutes. It opened in the United States on November 5, 1999 and in Turkey on March 3, 2000. Not a box-office hit, it won critical acclaim and seven Academy Award nominations.
Wigand (Russell Crowe) is research chief at a major cigarette company. After clashing with management he is fired and resolves to expose his former employer's unhealthy practices despite threats. Producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) fights his own network, CBS, over the forces trying to silence and discredit Wigand's testimony. Christopher Plummer plays Mike Wallace and Diane Venora plays Liane Wigand, with Bruce McGill, Philip Baker Hall, Gina Gershon, Michael Gambon and Debi Mazar in the cast. The film also probes the clash between a broadcaster's editorial line and its finances.
Touchstone Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment were among its producers; it runs 157 minutes. Its Oscar nominations included Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Crowe. Critics singled out Crowe's Wigand and Mann's direction.
