Jean-Paul Salomé directed Female Agents (original French title Les Femmes de l'ombre), a French war drama and thriller from 2008. It centres on women who served in the secret war of the Second World War and draws on a real agent. It premiered on 8 February 2008 and reached Belgium on 5 March. BBC Films partly funded it; in Germany it skipped cinemas and went straight to DVD and Blu-ray.

The story is set on the eve of the Normandy landings. Louise Desfontaines (Sophie Marceau), a former member of the French Resistance, is recruited by the SOE, Britain's intelligence and sabotage organisation. A British geologist agent involved in the invasion preparations has been captured by the Germans and must be freed before he talks. Louise hurriedly assembles an all-female team: Suzy, a cabaret dancer who knows how to charm men; Gaëlle, a chemist and explosives specialist; and Jeanne, who can kill in cold blood. Alongside Marceau, the cast features Julie Depardieu, Marie Gillain, Déborah François and Moritz Bleibtreu, with Maya Sansa and Xavier Beauvois also credited.

Salomé wrote the screenplay with Laurent Vachaud. The character of Louise is modelled on the Mauritius-born SOE agent Lise de Baissac (1905-2004), whom the director found through her obituary in The Times.
