Dhobi Ghat
Dhobi Ghat is a 2010 Indian drama that marked Kiran Rao's directorial debut; it was also released internationally under the titles Mumbai Diaries and Bombay Diaries. Produced by Rao and Aamir Khan, the film stars Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra in the lead roles. Shot in Hindi and English, it treats the city of Mumbai almost as a character of its own.
The story follows four people whose lives intersect by chance: Arun, a solitary painter; Shai, a banker and passionate photographer; Munna, a washerman who dreams of becoming an actor; and Yasmin, a woman filming video diaries for her newlywed brother. Scored by Gustavo Santaolalla and featuring a song by Ryuichi Sakamoto, the film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2010 and opened in cinemas on 21 January 2011. Regarded as parallel art cinema, it was well received by critics and longlisted for the 65th BAFTA Award for Best Film Not in the English Language.
