Danish Girl (Danimarkalı Kız) (translated)

The Danish Girl is a 2015 biographical romantic drama directed by Tom Hooper, with a screenplay by Lucinda Coxon adapted from David Ebershoff's 2000 novel, itself loosely inspired by the lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. Set in 1920s Copenhagen, the story follows the married artist couple Einar and Gerda Wegener, whose relationship is transformed when Gerda asks her husband to pose in women's clothing. The experience awakens Einar's female identity, and he gradually comes to live as Lili, eventually undergoing one of the earliest known gender-affirming surgeries, while Gerda struggles to hold on to the person she married.

Eddie Redmayne plays Elbe and Alicia Vikander plays Wegener, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Ben Whishaw, Sebastian Koch and Amber Heard in supporting roles. The film competed at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival, screened at the 2015 Toronto festival, opened in limited US release on 27 November 2015 and reached UK cinemas on 1 January 2016. Vikander won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Redmayne was nominated for Best Actor, and the film earned further Oscar nominations for production design and costume design, despite some criticism of its historical accuracy.
