1922

1922 is a 1978 Greek historical drama film directed by Nikos Koundouros, who also wrote the screenplay. It was produced by the Greek Film Centre and runs about 135 minutes.

The film is adapted from Number 31328, the autobiographical novel by Greek writer Elias Venezis. Its story is set in and around Smyrna (Izmir) in 1922, when the Turkish army entered the city, and it follows the suffering of ethnic Greek civilians taken prisoner. Drawing on Venezis's own experiences, the narrative portrays the devastation of the Asia Minor catastrophe through the eyes of the captives.

The film proved controversial in Greece upon release: the conservative government of the day refused to distribute it, citing friendship with Turkey, though it was argued that the real objection lay in how Koundouros depicted the state's incompetence during the disaster. The cast includes Minas Chatzisavvas, Zacharias Rochas, Vasilis Kolovos, Katerina Gogou and Olga Tournaki.
