Tamer Balcı — Biography
Tamer Balcı, born Toma Valcis on February 12, 1918, on Istanbul's Heybeliada island, was a Turkish athlete and film actor of Greek descent, nicknamed "Tarzan Toma." Regarded as the country's top hammer thrower between 1940 and 1955, he set the national record eleven times and won the Turkish championship on fifteen occasions, though he never competed after qualifying to represent Turkey at the 1948 and 1952 Olympics.
He turned to acting in 1951 and went on to appear in roughly two dozen films, most famously starring as Tarzan in "Tarzan İstanbul'da" (1952). His filmography also includes "Nasreddin Hoca ve Timurlenk" (1954), "They Paid With Their Blood" (1955), and "Babacan" (1975). Balcı died on April 10, 1993.
