Suat Yalaz — Biography
Suat Yalaz (1 January 1932, Çiçekdağı, Kırşehir – 2 March 2020, Istanbul) was a Turkish comic book artist, caricaturist, screenwriter, film director and producer, a graduate of the State Academy of Fine Arts. He also signed his work under pen names such as Toro Gi and Jimmy Toro, and often drew on different periods of Turkish history as subject matter.
He is best known as the creator of Karaoğlan, and also created other classic figures of Turkish comics such as Yandım Ali. Yalaz adapted Karaoğlan for the screen seven times, serving as director, screenwriter and producer. His 2020 death prompted his son Kaan Yalaz to publicly share his grief, and the same day brought the death of fellow comics veteran Abdullah Turhan, a coincidence that deeply saddened the Turkish comics world.
