Sibil Pektorosoğlu — Biography
Sibil Pektorosoğlu, who performs under the single name Sibil, is a singer of Armenian descent from Istanbul. Her lyric soprano voice, shaped by long years in a church choir, made her one of the few voices coming out of Turkey to sing Armenian pop music. She became known on diaspora stages and in Armenia through her Armenian-language songs, and returned to the headlines in the summer of 2026 with a duet built around a historic recording of Gomidas.
She started as a child in the church choir where her father sang. For about twenty years she was a chorister and soloist in the choir of the Surp Vartanants Church in Feriköy, taking part in some sixty concerts and sharing a stage with Sezen Aksu and Nükhet Duru. She wanted a conservatory education but entered working life early and spent years as a consultant at a financial investment company. Encouraged by the composer Cenk Taşkan (Majak Toshikyan), she recorded Armenian songs: her 2010 album Sibil featured Mercan Dede, and Djivan Gasparyan and Ara Gevorgyan contributed to Ser, released in 2014. A year after the first album she left the choir to devote herself fully to Armenian popular music.
In 2015 she sang "Desnem Ani'n u Nor Mernem", a song she had long dreamed of performing, in front of the ruins of Ani, and sang it again at the opening ceremony of the Pan-Armenian Summer Games in Yerevan. She won an award at the Armenia Music Awards in Moscow in 2012, and received the Medal of Gratitude and the Komitas Medal from Armenia and a gold medal from the city of Yerevan.
