Sibel Can — Biography

Sibel Can, born Sibel Cangüre on 1 August 1970 in Istanbul, is a Turkish singer, actress and presenter. With a career spanning more than forty years she is counted among the best-known and most successful female singers in Turkey; alongside her music she has acted in television series and in cinema and has hosted various programmes.

She began her life on stage not as a singer but as a belly dancer, first appearing on stage at the age of fourteen. Some time later she turned to music, moving into singing with the album Günah Bize, released in 1987. The master of arabesque music Orhan Gencebay contributed to the making of that first album. In her early years she sang in the arabesque and fantezi styles, winning a wide audience with albums such as Rüyalarda Buluşuruz (1989), Bir Güneş Batışında (1992) and Hatırasıdır (1994).

From the mid-1990s onwards she broadened her repertoire towards pop music. After the albums Bu Devirde (1997) and Daha Yolun Başındayım (1999), the 2000s brought Canım Benim (2001), Sen Benimsin (2003), Özledin mi? (2005), Akşam Sefası (2007) and Benim Adım Aşk (2009). In the same period she also made albums turning to the Turkish art music repertoire, foremost among them İşte Türk Sanat Müziği İşte Sibel Can of 2008.

She kept up her output in the decades that followed. After the albums Seyyah (2011), Meşk (2012), Galata (2014), Arabesque (2016), Yeni Aşkım (2018) and Hayat (2020), she went on releasing new recordings with Drama (2025) and Kıyamam (2026).

In parallel with her music career she has also appeared on screen. After the series Kaldırım Çiçeği (1996), Gülüm (1997) and Bize Ne Oldu (1999), she became known as an actress with Berivan, the 2002 series in which she took the lead role; the same year she appeared in the film Papatya ile Karabiber. In later years she acted in Saklambaç (2005), Ahh İstanbul (2006) and Sevda'nın Bahçesi (2017).
