Sercan Güvenışık — Biography

Sercan Güvenışık is a forward with Turkish and German citizenship who developed in Germany and spent most of his career there. He made his Bundesliga debut for MSV Duisburg at 19, and in 2012 became the first Turkish player to sign in MLS when he joined San Jose Earthquakes. He now works as a player agent.

He started in the youth setup of VSC 1862 Donauwörth, played in FC Augsburg's youth programme from 1997 and spent a short time in Bayern Munich's youth system. In 1999 he moved to Duisburg, where in four years he made 80 league appearances and scored 12 goals. After 2003 came short spells in Turkey (Denizlispor, Manisaspor) and at 1. SC Feucht. At Preußen Münster he scored six goals in 11 games in the second half of a season and became a crowd favourite known as "King Güven", though he could not prevent the club's relegation. In 2006 he joined FC Carl Zeiss Jena but was sidelined for six months by a cruciate ligament injury. In 2007 he joined Rot-Weiss Essen, and in 2008-09 he scored 17 goals in 30 matches for SC Paderborn 07, helping the club to promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

With little playing time in his second season at Paderborn he returned to Münster at the winter break; in 2010-11 his seven goals helped the club to promotion to the 3. Liga. He left MLS after the 2012 season; later he played for Miami Dade FC and won the APSL championship in 2017. He also played for Turkey's youth national teams.
