Şehmus Özer — Biography
Şehmus Özer was a forward who captained Amedspor, the club of his home city Diyarbakır. He belonged to the football family known in Turkey as the “Özer Brothers”, in which all six sons played; his brothers Zülküf, Nezir, Sadettin, Cihan and Oktay were footballers too. He won league titles and promotions to the Süper Lig several times, and died in a road accident on 19 December 2016.
He began at Erganispor's youth system in Ergani, signed professionally in 1998 and made his first official appearance on 29 August 1998 against Yüksekova Belediyespor in the Third League. With Malatyaspor he won the First League play-offs and reached the Süper Lig, where he played four matches before being loaned to Kayserispor. He was a regular starter at Mardinspor for four seasons, scoring 43 goals in 119 league matches and winning the Second League in 2003-04. He also played for Karşıyaka, Altay, Mersin İdman Yurdu and Akhisar Belediyespor, winning the First League with the last two, then moved to Şanlıurfaspor and, in 2013-14, back to Altay.
His final club was Amedspor, for whom he scored 35 goals in 86 matches over three seasons. He died in a road accident in Sivrice, Elazığ, while returning to Diyarbakır after a friend's wedding in Malatya. Amedspor's supporters keep his memory alive, and a club facility bears his name.
