Şaziye Moral — Biography
Şaziye Moral (1903, Kırcaali – 9 April 1985, Istanbul) was a Turkish stage and film actress who also worked as a dubbing artist. She is remembered as the second Muslim woman to appear on the Turkish stage, after Afife Jale.
Born in what was then Eastern Rumelia to a father who worked as a civil servant, she lost her mother in childbirth and was raised, together with her twin, by her grandfather. The family later moved to Istanbul, where she studied at the Dârülmuallimât teacher training school. Her first appearance came in 1919 in Celal Yakup's play Kırık Kalp, and it drew a police investigation, because Muslim women were then forbidden to perform.
After touring with an amateur troupe she joined the Darülbedayi company in 1924 and travelled widely with Raşit Rıza and Bedia Muvahhit. By her retirement in 1977 she had acted in more than two hundred plays and over sixty films, among them Kadın Severse (1968) and Beyoğlu Güzeli (1971). She died in Istanbul at the age of 82.
