Rana Cabbar — Biography

Born Rana Solakyan in Istanbul in 1945, Rana Cabbar was a Turkish film, television and stage actor of Armenian and Greek descent. He began his career as a founding member of the Ankara Art Theatre, performing in more than thirty productions there between 1964 and 1979. From the 1980s he moved into cinema, and by the 2000s had become a familiar character actor on television, best remembered for playing Süleyman Efendi in the series Aşk-ı Memnu. His film credits include A Season in Hakkari, Şahmaran, Akrebin Yolculuğu and Kabadayı, and his portrayal of the Kadı Efendi character in Vezir Parmağı earned him a best-actor prize at the Sadri Alışık Theatre and Film Actor Awards. That he was a Catholic Armenian became widely known to the public only after his death. Cabbar died on 20 April 2023, at age 78, following a period of illness.
