Özdemir Erdoğan — Biography

Özdemir Erdoğan is a Turkish musician whom the wider public knows through one song above all: Gurbet. It speaks of the 1960s labour migration and of people who leave their homeland to live abroad, and it remains his signature. A singer, guitarist and songwriter working between jazz and light music, he was named a State Artist in 1998 and is still performing.

His family introduced him to music early. His mother was a classical pianist and his uncle a classical musician who played violin and piano, and his first musical training came from that circle. On his mother's side the family was Armenian, his paternal grandmother was Circassian and his father came from the Black Sea region. The conditions of the 1940s and 1950s, together with his father's insistence on a solid basic education, kept him from formal arts training; during school years that lasted until he was 15 or 16, his teachers noticed his leaning towards the arts and encouraged it. He graduated from Kadıköy Commerce High School in 1960 and did his military service as a reserve-officer teacher, serving as head teacher in the village of Araplar in Besni, Adıyaman.

His work has been recognised with several awards: an Honour Award at the 14th Kral TV Video Music Awards in 2008, a Lifetime Achievement Award from İKSV at the Istanbul Jazz Festival in 2016, the Presidential Grand Award for Culture and Arts in 2020 and the Üsküdar University Higher Human Values Award in 2025.
