Oya Başar — Biography

Oya Başar is one of the best-known actresses of Turkish theatre and television comedy; her name is tied above all to the theatre she founded with her husband Levent Kırca and to the long-running sketch series Olacak O Kadar. She is still on stage today, performing the play Plastik Aşklar with Begüm Birgören in Turkey and in London.

She first stepped onto a stage at about eight, at the Istanbul City Theatres, encouraged by her father. She studied with Ali Sururi and played at Devekuşu Kabare, İstanbul Tiyatrosu and Ali Poyrazoğlu Tiyatrosu. Her first film role came in 1966 with Oduncunun Çocukları, and through the 1970s she appeared in many Yeşilçam films in supporting parts. In the mid-1980s she and Kırca founded a theatre company under their names; from 1986 she acted in, directed and produced Olacak O Kadar. She later returned to the City Theatres for the musical Yedi Kocalı Hürmüz.

From the 2000s she was remembered on television for roles such as Neriman Turuncu in Benim Annem Bir Melek, Zarife in Roman Havası and Kadriye in the film Yusuf & Yusuf. She also appeared in series such as Alemin Kıralı, O Hayat Benim and Meleklerin Aşkı. She married Kırca in 1985; they parted for good in 2005. Başar says she has no social media accounts.
