Onat Kutlar — Biography
Onat Kutlar (full name Mehmet Arif Onat Kutlar; 25 January 1936, Alanya – 11 January 1995, Istanbul) was a Turkish poet, writer and screenwriter. He left Istanbul University's Faculty of Law before his final examination and went to Paris to study philosophy, returning two years later to work for the magazine Doğan Kardeş.
His 1959 story collection İshak won the Turkish Language Association Award in 1960 and is regarded as one of the first examples of magical realism in Turkish literature. In 1965 he founded the Turkish Sinematek Association and the journal Yeni Sinema, running the association until 1976, and was among the founders of the Istanbul International Film Festival. He served on the jury of the 1985 Berlin Film Festival and received the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1994.
He wrote the screenplays for films such as Hazal (1979), Yusuf ile Kenan (1979) and Hakkari'de Bir Mevsim (1982), winning the Golden Orange for Best Screenplay. Seriously wounded in the bomb attack on Istanbul's Marmara Hotel on 30 December 1994, he died of his injuries on 11 January 1995.
